Hailey Gonzalez didn't set out to work in biotechnology — she planned on veterinary medicine, until two jobs working with animals convinced her it wasn't the right fit. That detour led her to Citrus College's biotechnology program and, ultimately, to a career manufacturing plasma-derived medicines that help immunocompromised patients like her own niece.

A Rowland Heights native, Hailey initially enrolled at Citrus College hoping to complete her core classes before transferring to study veterinary medicine. During a meeting with counselor Natalie Desimone, she learned about the then-new biotechnology program and decided to give it a try.

"After my first course in the program, I knew I found the right choice for me," she said.

Over the next few years, Hailey succeeded in the classroom and lab, graduating with an Associate of Science in Biotechnology in 2025.

Soon after, she landed a job as a manufacturing technician II for Grifols, a global leader in plasma-derived and transfusion medicines. Her current duties include ensuring product efficacy through good manufacturing practices, regular auditing of documentation and careful handling of hazardous materials.

"My work contributes to the well-being of immunocompromised individuals, like my niece who was recently diagnosed with leukemia," she said. "Knowing that the product I'm manufacturing gives hope to individuals who struggle with their day-to-day lives is what makes my laborious days easier."

For Hailey, the training she received at Citrus College translated directly to her success in the workplace.

"The coursework translated almost seamlessly for understanding how we use heavy machinery for process, as well as the more technical instruments we utilize regularly," she said.

Current students looking to enter the field should continue to hone their documentation skills, Hailey added, and make it a priority to connect with those already working in the industry.

"Don't allow fear, doubt or even personal restrictions to stop you from making connections, because those connections could lead to your life-long career," she said.
